Emphasis
Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point. Focal point refers to an area in the composition that has the most significance - an area that the artist wants to draw attention to as the most important aspect.

Balance
The arrangement of elements so that no one part of a work overpowers or seems heavier than any other part.
Symmetrical- Similar on both sides.
Asymmetrical- Different on both sides.
Radial- Forces or elements of design come out (radiate) from a central point.

Pattern
The repetition of elements or combinations of elements in a recognizable organization. Patterning can be regular or irregular. It can be made with stripes, zigzags, scallops, plaid, checkerboard…

Contrast
The differences within elements, such as light colors next to dark colors or curved lines next to sharp angles.
